What to Wear for Fall Family and Engagement Photos in Colorado
Fall is the busiest season of the year for portraits in Colorado, and the question I get before every single session is the same one. What should we wear? I am Casey Van Horn, the photographer behind Two One Photography in Castle Pines, and I have photographed more than 800 weddings along with family and engagement sessions across the Front Range, the foothills and the mountain towns. This is the outfit guide I send my own clients, written specifically for how fall light and fall color behave in Colorado.
What Colors Work Best for Fall Photos in Colorado
Warm earth tones photograph best against Colorado fall color. Rust, camel, cream, warm brown, olive and deep burgundy sit beside gold aspen and rust oak brush without fighting it. Cool grey, stark white and head to toe black tend to pull the warmth out of the frame, so use them as accents rather than as the main color of the group.
There are really only two palettes you need to choose between, and both of them work everywhere in the state.
- Warm neutrals. Cream, oatmeal, ivory, camel, soft taupe, chocolate brown, khaki. This palette is quiet, it never dates, and it lets the fall color behind you do the talking. It is my favorite for golden hour in open grass.
- Warm jewel tones. Burgundy, terracotta, mustard, forest green, deep teal, dusty mauve. This palette has more personality and it holds up better under the flat grey light of a cloudy October afternoon.
Pick one of those two directions for the whole group. Mixing a cream and camel palette with a burgundy and forest green palette is where most family outfits go sideways.
Build the Whole Group Around One Anchor Piece
Choose one person’s outfit first, then pull three or four colors out of it and give one of those colors to everybody else. That single step is the difference between a family that looks coordinated and a family that looks like it is wearing a uniform. Matching reads as a team photo. Coordinating reads as a family.
The anchor is usually the piece with the most going on. A floral dress, a plaid skirt, a patterned blouse. Lay it out, name the colors inside it, and shop the rest of the closet against that short list. One patterned piece per group is the limit. Everyone else goes in solids or in texture.
If nobody in the group owns a pattern, the anchor can just be the deepest color you want in the frame. Put that on one person, then step everyone else down through lighter versions of the same family.
Layers Matter More Here Than Almost Anywhere Else
Colorado temperatures can swing thirty degrees between the start of a session and the end of it, and the drop is fastest above 7,000 feet once the sun goes behind a ridge. Bring a layer for every single person. A cardigan, a denim or corduroy jacket, a chunky knit, a wrap. Layers solve the cold, and they also hand us a second look without a full outfit change.
That last part is worth saying twice. A shawl over a dress, a jacket on and then off, a sweater tied at the waist. Each of those reads as a different outfit in the gallery. It is the cheapest wardrobe change there is and it costs us no session time.
Practically speaking, the family that gets cold is the family that ends the session twenty minutes early. Tights under dresses, warm socks inside boots, and a puffy jacket in the car for the walk back are not glamorous, but they buy us the last and best light of the evening.
Texture Photographs Better Than Pattern
Texture is what keeps a warm neutral outfit from going flat on camera. Cable knit, waffle knit, corduroy, suede, wool, linen and raw denim all catch light and build depth into an otherwise simple color. A cream cable knit sweater and a plain cream tee are the same color in the closet and completely different photographs.
What does not photograph well is thin shiny jersey, stiff polyester with a sheen, and anything that clings. Those fabrics catch highlights in odd places, they crease across the lap in every seated pose, and they never quite look like they fit.
If you are choosing between two versions of the same shirt, take the heavier one. Weight almost always wins in a photograph.
What to Leave in the Closet
A short list of things that make an otherwise lovely outfit hard to work with.
- Neon and bright saturated brights. They bounce color onto faces and skin, which is very hard to correct out.
- Large logos, slogans and licensed characters. They date the photo immediately and they pull the eye straight off your faces.
- Everyone in head to toe black. One person in black is a beautiful anchor. A whole family in black turns into one dark shape at a distance.
- More than one busy pattern in the group. Two competing patterns standing next to each other will always fight.
- Brand new shoes. Stiff soles change how people stand and walk, and it shows in the wide shots.
- Anything straight out of the bag with fold creases. Steam it or press it the night before.
- Anything that needs constant adjusting. If a strap slips or a waistband rides up, you will be fixing it in every frame instead of looking at each other.
What to Wear for Fall Engagement Photos in Colorado
For engagement sessions, plan one elevated look and one relaxed look. The elevated one is usually a long dress in a solid warm tone with a coordinating sweater or button down. The relaxed one is good jeans, boots and a knit. Those two cover almost every image a couple wants out of a fall session, and the change takes about five minutes in the car.
Movement is the thing most couples underestimate. A skirt with weight and length photographs beautifully in open grass because Colorado wind is almost always doing something. Daniels Park, Chatfield and the open space above Golden are all exposed, so choose a fabric that will look intentional when it moves instead of one that will plaster itself flat.
Coordinate the two of you the same way a family coordinates. One of you in a warm neutral and the other in a deeper tone from the same family reads beautifully. Cream and chocolate brown, oatmeal and rust, ivory and forest green. Identical shirts do not.
One more practical note. Heels sink into grass and dirt at every single one of these locations. Wear boots or flats for the walking and carry the heels for the handful of frames where you actually want them.
Dressing Kids So They Last the Whole Session
Comfort is the entire strategy with kids. If a collar itches, a waistband pinches or the shoes are stiff, you will see it on their face in every frame and no amount of coaxing fixes it. Have them wear the outfit around the house for an hour beforehand, and let them help pick between two options you have already approved.
- Shoes they already like. Boots and sneakers they have worn are worth more than new ones that look better.
- Tights or leggings under every dress, even when the forecast looks warm.
- A backup top for whoever is most likely to spill, because someone always does.
- Snacks and water in the bag, out of sight until we need them.
- Their favorite jacket, even if it does not match. Some of the best candid frames of the night are a kid in their own coat.
When Colorado Fall Color Actually Peaks, and Why It Changes What You Wear
The Colorado State Forest Service notes that higher elevation stands, and those farther north, turn first in September and early October, with lower and more southerly locations following after. In practice that means the solid gold aspen you see in mid September is almost always well above 9,000 feet, while Front Range cottonwoods and oak brush are still holding color into late October.
That matters for your outfits because the two settings have different backdrops. High country aspen is a wall of uniform gold, which takes deeper and more saturated tones without getting lost. Front Range cottonwood and scrub oak give you gold plus rust plus a lot of remaining green, which is busier, so lighter neutrals read cleaner against it.
One timing note that catches almost everyone. At foothills and canyon locations the sun drops behind the ridge well before the published sunset time, so the good light ends earlier than the forecast suggests. I build session start times around the ridge rather than the sunset, which is why the time I give you for Daniels Park and the time I give you for a spot out on the plains are rarely the same.
Three Palettes That Have Worked Over and Over
If you would rather just be handed an answer, start with one of these. Each of these is pulled straight from a real session.
Golden park, early October
Cream, oatmeal, khaki, one soft blue, warm brown shoes and belts. Light, quiet and easy to shop for, and it glows when the late sun comes through yellow leaves.
Mountain golden hour, late September
Cream cable knit, a brown and cream plaid, one warm floral, chocolate corduroy, and black as the single accent. Lots of texture, one pattern doing the heavy lifting.
Late October cottonwoods
Burgundy, rust, dusty mauve, navy and denim. More saturated, holds up under grey skies, and it looks right once the leaves are already on the ground.
The Week Before Your Session
- Lay every outfit out side by side on a bed and look at the group as one picture rather than as five separate people.
- Take a photo of that layout and text it to me. I will tell you honestly if something is fighting, and it is much easier to fix on a Tuesday than in a parking lot at golden hour.
- Steam or press everything the night before and hang it. Creases photograph.
- Break in any new shoes. Ten minutes around the house is enough.
- Pack the bag. Layers for everyone, snacks, water, a brush, blotting papers, one backup top.
- Check the forecast the morning of, not the week of. Colorado will change its mind.
Questions I Get Every Fall
What is the best time of day for fall photos in Colorado?
The last ninety minutes before sunset is the best light of the day for almost every Colorado location, and at foothills and canyon spots the usable part of that window ends early because the sun goes behind the ridge. An overcast day opens the schedule up because the light stays even all afternoon.
Can we wear jeans for family photos?
Yes. Darker washes with no fading or distressing photograph best, and they look right in every Colorado setting from a city park to a mountain trail. Mixing a few washes across the group is fine. Head to toe denim on everyone is the only version to avoid.
Should everyone wear the same color?
No. Pick one palette of three or four related colors and give each person a different one. Matching shirts flatten a group into a single block, while coordinated colors keep everyone separate and let the eye move through the photo.
How many outfits should we bring to a fall session?
One outfit plus layers is plenty for a family session. Couples usually bring two, one elevated and one relaxed. Beyond that we start spending session time changing instead of photographing, and fall light does not wait.
What happens if it snows on our fall session?
We shoot anyway if you are up for it, and those are often the best galleries of the season. Early snow on gold leaves is a look you cannot plan for. Bring the warm layers, wear boots with grip, and keep a coat in the car for between setups.
How do we handle the wind?
Choose fabric with some weight to it and bring a hair tie. Wind at the open space locations along the Front Range is close to constant in the fall, and a skirt or a long coat with movement will photograph as intentional rather than as a problem.
What should we wear for fall engagement photos specifically?
One long dress in a solid warm tone with a coordinating sweater or button down for him, and one relaxed look built on dark denim, boots and a knit. Add a shawl or a jacket as a layer and you have three distinct looks out of two outfits. You can see more of what a session looks like on my engagement session page.

Let Us Get Your Fall Session on the Calendar
If you are looking at a shorter session instead, my guide to fall and holiday mini sessions walks through how those work. Fall dates along the Front Range fill earlier every year, and the good golden hour slots in late September and October go first. If you are thinking about family photos, an engagement session, or both, reach out through my contact page and tell me roughly when and where you are picturing it. I will help you choose the location, the time and the palette, and I will happily look at a photo of your outfits laid out on the bed before the day arrives.
Two One Photography is based in Castle Pines, Colorado, and photographs families, couples and weddings throughout Castle Rock, Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder and the Colorado mountain towns.
